The historical walls of Istanbul, which began construction in the 5th century during the Eastern Roman Empire and surround the city, continue to carry the traces of history to the present day while also resisting time.
The historical walls, which are among the symbols of the conquest of Istanbul, are among the longest historical works in the world.
The historical walls, which attract the attention of local and foreign tourists with a length of approximately 20 kilometers and 520 meters, 6,600 meters on the land side, 8,500 meters on the Marmara side and 5,420 meters on the Golden Horn side, consist of 3 sections: land walls, moat, outer wall and inner wall.
Adjacent to the walls, there are 96 bastions, many of which are collapsed and cracked today, most of which have a square plan and are 25 meters high.
There is no moat or outer wall in front of the Marmara and Golden Horn walls. The thickness of these walls is 5 meters and their height reaches up to 15 meters. There are 103 bastions on the Marmara side of these walls and 94 on the Golden Horn side.
