ITG-105-Walking Tour at the Old Istanbul

“ Daily Tour ”

The Eastern Roman Grand Palace was built in the area between today's Hagia Sophia and Sultanahmet Square. To symbolize the glory of the capital, Hagia Sophia rose in the city square with all its majesty. The area where people spent their daily lives and, in a sense, socialized, was the Hippodrome, which we know today as Sultanahmet Square, with its entrance right next to Hagia Sophia.

After the conquest of Istanbul, the center of state administration did not change. Topkapý Palace was built close to the location of the Grand Palace, Hagia Sophia was converted into a mosque, and the Hippodrome became the Horse Square where javelin games were played. The city grew and developed around this center.

Below you can find a one-day route within walking distance of Sultanahmet and its surroundings, which will include the first settlements of the city from this perspective.

The Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, Hiippodrome, Topkapi Palace, Basilica Cistern, Grand Bazaar
