ITG-160-The Million Stone Istanbul

“ Daily Tour ”

The Million Stone is a stone located near the entrance to the Basilica Cistern in Istanbul. This stone, which many people have passed by without noticing until today, has a historical feature. The stone, which is accepted to have been erected by the Roman Emperor Constantine I in the 4th century, is the starting point of the Ancient Roman roads reaching Istanbul and the zero point used in calculating the distances of other cities in the world to Istanbul. The Million Stone was built in the shape of a tetrapylon (a rectangular structure consisting of four columns, four doors and a dome), an important style in Roman culture. Although there were reliefs and statues on its dome when it was built, some of the historical stone collapsed over time.

Until 1884, it was accepted that the zero meridian passed through Istanbul, where the Million Stone is located. Therefore, many countries in the world set their clocks according to Istanbul. In fact, maps were prepared based on this point and directions were found according to this point.

If you want to see the Million Stone during your trip to Istanbul, one of our experienced guides can accompany you. You can walk to the Million Stone and many other important places with your private tour guide.
